The $400 AR Build That Actually Runs
You can put an AR-15 together for around four hundred bucks. It won't win a carbine match, and it is not a duty gun. It will go bang every time you press the trigger — and for a first build, that is the entire assignment.
First, the honest number
"$400 AR" is a real thing, but it lives and dies on timing. Buy stripped parts on a slow week and you'll clear it. Buy in a panic and you won't. Budget $450–550 all-in once you count shipping, one magazine, and the transfer fee on the lower — anyone quoting you a flat $400 forgot the mag or the FFL.
The trick isn't finding the cheapest parts. It's knowing which cheap parts are exactly as good as the expensive ones (most of them) and which two or three you don't gamble on.
Worth saying plainly, because most build guides won't: at this price point, building is not cheaper than buying. A complete budget carbine on sale often lands at or below what your parts pile costs. You build because you want to choose every component, because you want the rifle to grow with you, and because a person who has assembled an AR can diagnose one. Those are good reasons. "Saving money" is not one of them at build number one.
What "runs" actually means
It feeds, fires, extracts, ejects, and locks back on an empty mag — cold, hot, dirty, every time. That's it. It does not mean sub-MOA, featherweight, or pretty. Reliability is the only spec that matters on build number one. You can chase the rest after you've proven the gun works.
A useful standard: 200 rounds of decent ammo with zero malfunctions that aren't the magazine's fault. Hit that and the rifle has earned your trust. Miss it and you have a diagnosis problem, not a parts problem — and the mistakes section below covers where to look first.
The complete parts list
The single best decision a first-time builder makes is buying a complete upper — barrel, bolt carrier group, charging handle, and handguard already assembled and headspaced at the factory. It deletes the three steps people actually screw up (headspacing, gas tube alignment, staking the gas key) and turns your "build" into: finish the lower, drop the upper on, function check. Do that first. Piece out an upper on build two.

Prices are ballparks and they move weekly. The whole point of the deal board is to send you to the live price on the retailer's page — don't take a number in a guide as gospel.
A note on barrel specs
If you do piece out an upper, the two numbers that matter are twist rate and gas length. A 1:7 twist stabilizes heavier bullets (62gr and up) and handles everything lighter fine — it's the safe default. 1:8 is an excellent all-rounder. Avoid 1:12 unless you specifically intend to shoot only light 55gr loads.
For gas length on a 16" barrel, mid-length is the better choice over carbine: it's a softer impulse, easier on parts, and just as reliable. Carbine-length gas on a 16" barrel works — millions of rifles run it — but mid-length is the free upgrade if both are the same price.
Also check the chamber. You want 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde, not .223 Remington. A 5.56 or Wylde chamber safely fires both 5.56 and .223; a .223 Remington chamber should not be fed 5.56 pressure ammo. Wylde is the accuracy-minded pick, 5.56 NATO the practical one.
Tools you'll need
Budget about $60–100 for tools, and remember they're a one-time purchase you'll reuse on every future build.

The cheapest insurance in this hobby: tape off the receiver around every pin you drive, and work over a towel or a shallow box. Detent springs are launched, not dropped — and they always land where you can't find them.
Where to save
These are the parts where "budget" and "premium" are the same aluminum with a different roll mark:
- The lower receiver. A forged 7075 mil-spec lower is a forged 7075 mil-spec lower. The $60 one and the $200 one do the identical job. The lower holds the trigger and the magazine; it does not see chamber pressure.
- The lower parts kit, stock, and grip. Fit-and-finish, not function. Upgrade the trigger later if you care.
- Handguard finish and muzzle device. A raw or blem handguard runs exactly as well as a pretty one. A plain A2 flash hider is fine forever.
- Blems in general. A cosmetic-reject part at 20–40% off is the single best value in this hobby — see our guide on reading blem listings for what's safe and what isn't.
Where you do not save
- The bolt carrier group. Buy one that is MPI/HPT tested with a properly staked gas key. A cheap unstaked BCG will shoot itself loose. This is the #1 reason budget ARs go down. MPI (magnetic particle inspection) checks for cracks you can't see; HPT (high pressure test) proves the bolt survived an overpressure round.
- The barrel. Nitride chrome-moly is a great cheap barrel — but from a name that publishes its specs, not a no-brand mystery tube. (The complete-upper route handles this for you.)
- Staking the castle nut. It's free. Do it. An unstaked castle nut backs off under recoil and leaves you with a wobbly stock and a dead gun at the worst moment.
- Magazines. People spend $800 on a rifle and then feed it gas-station magazines. Most "the rifle is broken" problems are the magazine. Buy PMAGs; they cost twelve dollars.
Assembly, step by step
With a complete upper, the real work is the lower, and it's about 90 minutes the first time. This is the order that causes the fewest problems:
- Magazine catch. Insert from the left, thread the button on from the right, depress and turn until flush. Do this first — it's easiest with an empty receiver.
- Bolt catch. Tape the receiver around the roll pin hole. Set the spring and plunger, then start the roll pin with a starter punch and finish with a roll pin punch. This is the step people scar their receiver on.
- Trigger guard. Support the tab underneath so you don't snap that ear off — it is the most commonly broken part of the whole build. Support it with a socket or the vise block.
- Pivot pin. Detent, spring, then the pin. Cover the detent hole with your thumb or a punch as you rotate the pin in. This step launches more springs than any other.
- Trigger and hammer. Trigger in first with its spring legs resting on the floor of the receiver, push the trigger pin through. Then hammer, making sure the hammer spring legs rest on top of the trigger pin. Cock the hammer before you set the pin and it goes much easier.
- Safety selector, grip. Selector in with the trigger installed, then the detent and spring go into the grip, then the grip screws down. Don't overtighten the grip screw.
- Buffer tube assembly. Thread the castle nut on backward-facing first, then the receiver end plate, then thread the tube in until it just captures the buffer retainer and its spring — the retainer must be captured but still free to move. Buffer spring and buffer in, then torque the castle nut and stake it.
- Mate the upper. Drop it on, push the takedown pins, and you have a rifle.
If a step is fighting you, stop. Forcing AR parts is how receivers get cracked and detents get lost. Ninety percent of the time something is simply in backward — back up one step and look again.
The function check
Do this before the rifle ever sees ammunition, with the gun confirmed unloaded and pointed in a safe direction. It takes twenty seconds and catches almost every assembly error:
- Charge the rifle. Put the selector on SAFE. Pull the trigger — nothing should happen.
- Switch to FIRE. Pull the trigger — the hammer should drop with a clean click.
- Hold the trigger back. Charge the rifle again. Slowly release the trigger — you should feel and hear a distinct click as the disconnector hands the hammer to the sear.
- Pull the trigger again — it should fire.
- Insert an empty magazine, pull the charging handle — the bolt should lock back.
- Hit the bolt release — it should slam forward.
If any of these fail, do not take the rifle to the range. A trigger that fires on SAFE, or that doesn't reset, means the fire control group is installed wrong — pull it and check the hammer spring legs first.
Five mistakes that kill budget builds
1. An unstaked gas key
The two screws holding the gas key to the carrier are staked — metal is pushed over into the screw heads so they physically can't back out. Unstaked, they loosen under fire, gas leaks, and the rifle short-strokes. Look at the BCG photo before you buy: you should see visible deformation at the screw edges.
2. Blaming the rifle for the magazine
Failure to feed, bolt not locking back, rounds nose-diving — all classic magazine symptoms. Before you diagnose anything else, try two known-good PMAGs.
3. Running it bone dry
The AR is a wet gun. It wants to be lubricated, especially when new and tight. Oil the bolt, the carrier rails, and the cam pin generously. Most "won't cycle" first-range-trips are an under-lubed rifle. (In serious cold, lube choice changes — see our cold-weather lube guide.)
4. The backward castle nut
The castle nut has a smooth end and a notched end. The notched end faces rearward, away from the receiver, so you can stake it. Install it backward and you get to take the whole buffer assembly apart again.
5. Overtightening everything
Aluminum threads strip easily. The grip screw, the pistol grip, the handguard hardware — snug is the target, not gorilla-tight. The castle nut and the barrel nut are the only parts that want real torque.
What to upgrade first
Once the rifle has proven itself, this is the order that buys the most capability per dollar:

Notice what isn't on the list: a lighter handguard, a fancier charging handle, an adjustable gas block. Those are refinements for people who've already shot enough to know exactly what's bugging them.
FAQ
Can you really build an AR-15 for $400?
On the parts, yes, if you time it right. All-in with shipping, a magazine, and the FFL transfer, plan on $450–550. The $400 number is real but it assumes a slow sales week and some patience.
Is it cheaper to build or buy?
At the budget end, buying a complete rifle on sale is often the same or cheaper. Build for control, knowledge, and the upgrade path — not to save money.
Do I need an FFL to build an AR-15?
Only the stripped lower is a serialized firearm, and it must ship to an FFL for transfer ($25–50). Everything else — upper, barrel, BCG, handguard, stock — ships to your door.
Is building an AR-15 legal?
Building a rifle for your own personal use is federally legal, but state and local law varies enormously, and features that are fine in one state are prohibited in another. Verify your own state's rules on configuration, magazine capacity, and any registration requirement before you order. Nothing here is legal advice.
How long does a first build take?
About 90 minutes for the lower if you're careful, plus the time it takes to find the detent spring you launched. With a complete upper, that's the whole job.
What's the difference between 5.56 and .223 Wylde?
Wylde is a hybrid chamber that safely shoots both 5.56 and .223 while giving slightly better accuracy with .223. A 5.56 NATO chamber also shoots both safely. A .223 Remington chamber should not be fed 5.56.
Do I need a torque wrench?
For a complete-upper build, no — the castle nut is the only serious torque spec and an armorer's wrench handles it. If you're installing your own barrel nut, yes, get one.
