Cold-Weather Lube: What Survives −20°F
Most gun oil is rated for a garage in Georgia. Up here, at twenty below, the wrong lube turns to tar and your bolt short-strokes on the second round. This is what actually works when it's cold enough to hurt.
The physics, quickly
Oil thickens as it cools — every oil, no exceptions, just at different temperatures. Somewhere below 0°F a lot of "all-weather" CLP starts moving like cold honey. Below −20°F some of it slows a carrier enough to matter. The failure mode isn't dramatic; it's quiet and annoying: a sluggish action, a bolt that doesn't fully return to battery, failures to feed on the second and third round, light strikes on rimfire. The gun didn't break. The oil did.
The number to look for on a data sheet is pour point — the lowest temperature at which the oil still flows. Most general-purpose gun oils sit somewhere around −10°F to −20°F. Purpose-built cold lubes go far lower. If a product doesn't publish a pour point, that's usually its own answer.
Viscosity isn't the only thing changing, either. Metal contracts as it cools, so tolerances tighten slightly at the same time the oil is thickening. Two small effects stacking in the same direction is why a rifle that ran fine at 20°F can act possessed at −30°F.
The rule up here
Less is more, and thinner is better. The instinct to drown a bolt in oil is a warm-weather instinct. In deep cold you run a gun nearly dry, or with a genuinely low-viscosity oil, and you wipe off the excess before it can pool and gum. A dry-ish gun cycles cold. A greasy one seizes.
What works
- Slip 2000 EWL (Extreme Weather Lube) — the honest top pick. It's literally built for this and stays fluid to around −50°F. If you buy one thing for winter, buy this.
- Militec-1, applied thin and wiped down — used as a treatment rather than a wet oil, it leaves a slick film that doesn't gum in the cold. Good on bolts and rails.
- Dry lube (graphite / dry moly) — for the coldest days and for rimfire, a dry film doesn't thicken at all because there's nothing to thicken. This is the move for a 10/22 bolt at brutal temps.
- Break-Free CLP — fine down to about 0°F, gets sluggish colder. Perfectly usable if you run it sparingly and don't push it past its temperature.
What to leave at home
Leave the wax at home. FrogLube, paste lubes, heavy grease — anything wax- or paste-based turns into a brick when it's cold. It's great in summer and a liability in winter. Don't bring it hunting in January.
- Wax-based lubes. They're designed to set up into a film. In the cold that film becomes a solid, and a solid between your bolt and carrier is a stoppage.
- Heavy grease on the action. Grease belongs on slow-moving, high-pressure surfaces, and even then only in moderation up here. On a bolt carrier at −30°F it's glue.
- Motor oil and improvised substitutes. Multigrade motor oil is engineered to be pumped by an engine and is far thicker than gun oil at low temperature.
- Too much of anything good. The best cold lube applied heavily will pool, migrate, and collect frost. Application matters as much as product.
- WD-40 as a lubricant. It's a water displacer, not a lube. It'll strip the oil you wanted and leave a residue behind.
Condensation is the real enemy
The lube conversation gets all the attention, but the thing that actually kills cold guns is temperature swings. Bring a −20°F rifle into a warm cabin and it sweats — water condenses on and inside the metal. Take it back out and that water freezes, right in your action and firing-pin channel. Two rules: let a cold gun warm up slowly in a case before you open it up, or keep it cold and outside; and wipe it down and re-oil after any big temperature change. A frozen firing pin channel is a click when you needed a bang.
Platform by platform
AR-15
The AR is a wet gun by design and hates being run dry in normal weather — but "wet" in January means a thin film, not a puddle. Focus on the bolt lugs, the cam pin, and the carrier rails. Wipe the excess. The gas rings and the inside of the carrier want almost nothing. Direct-impingement guns actually do reasonably well in cold because the gas system runs hot and burns off moisture.
AK
Loose tolerances are your friend here. The AK is famously tolerant of cold and neglect, and it wants very little lubricant. A light film on the rails and the bolt is plenty. This is the platform least likely to give you trouble at temperature.
Glock and striker-fired pistols
Polymer-framed pistols do well cold, but the striker channel is the weak point. It must be bone dry — no oil at all. Oil in the striker channel plus deep cold plus condensation equals light strikes or a dead trigger. Four drops on the frame rails and the barrel hood is the whole job.
1911 and other tight-tolerance pistols
Tight guns feel the cold most. A 1911 running a heavy oil at −20°F can turn sluggish enough to fail to return to battery. Thin lube, thin application, and expect it to be less forgiving than a Glock.
Rimfire (10/22, bolt .22s)
Rimfire is the most cold-sensitive category, full stop. The cartridges are low-powered and the actions have less energy to overcome drag. Run these dry or with a dry film lube and keep the ammo warm. A .22 that runs beautifully in September will stovepipe repeatedly at −25°F if there's any oil in the action.
Bolt-action hunting rifles
The firing pin channel is the thing that will get you. Strip it and run it dry — that's where oil turns to grease and drops a firing pin at half energy, which is a click instead of a bang on the one animal that mattered. A dry bolt shroud is worth more than any lube choice.
Ammo, optics, and batteries
Ammunition
Powder burns slower cold. Expect measurably lower velocity — typically enough to shift point of impact at distance, so if you sighted in during summer, verify your zero in the conditions you'll hunt in. Rimfire is affected most; magnum rifle loads with slow powders also feel it.
Keep a few rounds warm in an inside pocket if you can. It's a small effect, but on rimfire it's the difference between reliable ignition and a hangfire.
Optics
Cold doesn't hurt glass, but it kills batteries. Lithium primaries (CR123, CR2032, AA lithium) massively outperform alkaline below freezing — alkalines can drop to a fraction of their capacity at −20°F, and they can leak. Carry a spare battery somewhere warm.
Fogging is the other issue. Fully sealed nitrogen- or argon-purged optics won't fog internally. External fogging is mostly caused by you — breathing on the eyepiece. Keep lens caps on until you're ready.
Your hands
Worth saying: a rifle that runs perfectly is useless if you can't work the safety with gloves on. Practice manipulating your gun wearing exactly what you'll be wearing outside. Oversized safeties and charging handles exist for this reason.
Prepping a rifle for a cold hunt
- Strip it down a day or two before, not the morning of.
- Degrease completely. Whatever summer lube is in there needs to come out — you can't thin it in place.
- Dry the firing pin channel and striker assembly. No oil. None.
- Apply cold-rated lube sparingly to the bearing surfaces only: bolt lugs, cam pin, rails.
- Wipe off everything you can see. If it looks wet, it's too much.
- Function-check it warm, then let it cold-soak outside or in an unheated shed overnight and function-check it again. This is the test that actually tells you something.
- Verify zero in the cold if the shot matters.
- Plan your storage. Cold gun stays cold. Don't cycle it in and out of a warm cabin.
The cold-soak test is the whole thing. Nobody finds out their lube failed on the bench at room temperature. Leave the rifle out overnight and cycle it in the morning before you trust it.

None of this is exotic. It's just the stuff you learn the hard way the first time a bolt won't close on a cow moose at legal light. Run it thin, run it cold-rated, and mind the condensation.

What is the best gun lube for cold weather?

Can you run a gun completely dry in the cold?
Yes, and in deep cold it's often the better choice — especially for rimfire and for firing pin channels. A dry gun cycles reliably; it just wears faster and has no corrosion protection, so clean and re-oil once you're back to normal temperatures.
Why won't my gun cycle in cold weather?
Nine times out of ten it's lubricant that has thickened. Other culprits: condensation that froze in the action after a temperature swing, a firing pin channel with oil in it, or ammunition that's simply making less pressure in the cold. Start by degreasing completely.
Does cold weather affect bullet velocity?
Yes. Powder burns slower at low temperature, producing measurably lower velocity and a lower point of impact at distance. If precision matters, confirm your zero in conditions similar to when you'll shoot.
Should I bring my gun inside after hunting in the cold?
Not straight into a warm room. Leave it cased and let it warm gradually, or store it somewhere cold. Bringing a −20°F rifle into a heated cabin causes condensation inside the action, which freezes solid the next time you go out.
Do gun optics work in extreme cold?
The glass is fine; the batteries are the problem. Use lithium batteries rather than alkaline — alkalines lose most of their capacity below freezing and can leak. Sealed, gas-purged optics won't fog internally.
